Survivor Series is getting a facelift. The traditional team-based premium live event is evolving with two WarGames matches. The new iteration of WWE’s second longest-running PLE takes place at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on Nov. 26.

WarGames is a team-based match featuring two rings contained within a large cell. One member of each team begins the match with an additional superstar entering one by one in timed intervals. The match cannot conclude until all participants have entered the fray. At that point, the first team to score a victory by pinfall, submission, surrender or knockout is declared the winner. Survivor Series was traditionally contested with traditional multi-person elimination team matches. 2022 marks the debut of WarGames on WWE’s main roster following appearances in NXT, WCW and National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).

On the men’s side, The Bloodline, comprised of Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Solo Sikoa and Sami Zayn, will battle Team Brawling Brutes, which consists of Sheamus, Ridge Holland, Butch, Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens. On the women’s side, it will be Team Damage CTRL, which features Bayley IYO SKY, Dakota Kai, Rhea Ripley and Nikki Cross, taking on the team of Bianca Belair, Asuka, Alexa Bliss, Mia Yim and Becky Lynch. Plus, two more title matches tip the bill when the action kicks off.

2022 WWE Survivor Series WarGames matches
The Bloodline (Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, Sami Zayn and Solo Sikoa) vs. Brawling Brutes (Sheamus, Butch and Ridge Holland), Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens (WarGames match): The building blocks for the men’s WarGames match were set on the SmackDown after Crown Jewel. Sheamus, returning from a storyline injury suffered at the hands of The Bloodline, and his fellow Brawling Brutes took the fight to Reigns’ tribe. A five-on-five WarGames match was confirmed the following week. Sheamus and McIntyre teased a fifth member had been acquired on the penultimate SmackDown before Survivor Series. Owens was revealed as the final participant later that evening, laying out Reigns and staring down his best friend Zayn.

Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Mia Yim and Becky Lynch vs. Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky), Nikki Cross and Rhea Ripley (WarGames match): Belair, Bliss and Asuka challenged Damage CTRL to WarGames on the Raw following Crown Jewel. Belair successfully defended her Raw women’s championship against Bayley in Saudi Arabia; meanwhile, Kai and Sky took the women’s tag team titles off Bliss and Asuka. Damage CTRL remains a thorn in the side of Belair and her allies. The trio is now boosted by their alliance with an unhinged Nikki Cross. Yim announced on Raw that she was joining up with Belair’s squad, which quickly drew her rival Ripley to be the fifth woman on Bayley’s side. Then on the go-home episode of SmackDown, Becky Lynch made her return after a few months away and announced she would also be joining forces with Belair’s squad, putting aside their rivalry that came to a head at SummerSlam.

SmackDown women’s championship — Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Shotzi: Shotzi won a Six-Pack Challenge on the SmackDown after Crown Jewel to earn a title shot against Rousey at Survivor Series. Shotzi pinned Lacey Evans in a match that also featured Liv Morgan, Sonya Deville, Liv Morgan and Xia Li. Following the match, Rousey’s ally Shayna Bazler choked out Shotzi while Rousey taunted her.

AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor: The issues with Styles and Balor have been ongoing since Balor joined up with The Judgement Day. Balor tried to recruit Styles, which failed repeatedly. Styles eventually brought The O.C. back together and the two factions have engaged in a series of matches and attacks. Styles finally laid out a direct challenge for a pay-per-view match between himself and Balor, which Balor accepted and the two men now will meet at Survivor Series.

United States championship — Seth Rollins (c) vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Austin Theory: Rollins took advantage of a severely compromised Lashley, who had been assaulted by Brock Lesnar moments earlier, in a U.S. title match on Oct. 10 with Rollins emerging victorious. Theory cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Rollins following an assault by Lashley on the Nov. 7 episode of Raw. Much to Theory’s disappointment, Lashley interfered and cost Theory his title match. Things have only escalated between the trio, leading to the announcement that a triple threat match would go down at Survivor Series.

One of WWE’s premier events returns on Saturday when Survivor Series comes to Boston. For the first time, WarGames will be the focal point of the second-oldest pay-per-view in promotional history.

WarGames has been a staple for NXT but the match, which was made famous in NWA and WCW, has never happened on the WWE main roster. That changes this year with five-on-five matches on both the men’s and women’s side of the roster.

The match sees two members of each team start in the ring, with members of the other teams being added one at a time. There is a cage surrounding two rings and the match traditionally features a ton of chaos and wild moments.

On the men’s side, The Bloodline, comprised of Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Solo Sikoa and Sami Zayn, will battle Team Brawling Brutes, which consists of Sheamus, Ridge Holland, Butch, Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens. Let’s take a closer look at who our CBS Sports experts predict will come out on top at WWE Survivor Series, which begins Saturday at 8 p.m. ET from TD Garden in Boston and streams live on Peacock.

It would make a ton of sense to have The Bloodline eat a loss here and refresh some challengers for Reigns and maybe even send Zayn out of the group to link up with Owens, now knowing inside info about how Reigns and his family tick. But WWE has seemed so committed to protecting the group, even when they could eat a meaningless loss here or there. Holland and Butch provide two bodies who are most likely to eat the loss than anyone on the Bloodline side, aside from Zayn if they choose to move that story forward now. I’d love to see it go the other way but picking The Bloodline always seems safe. Pick: The Bloodline wins — Brent Brookhouse

Very rarely is there an opportunity for The Bloodline to lose clean at a major event. Their status as record-setting champions makes them nearly bulletproof, but WarGames omits their titles from the equation. The Bloodline’s continued in-fighting could plant the seeds for something like Zayn’s exit or a coup in the group. Victory for the good guys will present Sheamus and Owens with well-deserved undisputed world title shots against Reigns. Simply, there are too many positive and intriguing outcomes stemming from The Bloodline’s defeat. Pick: The Brawling Brutes, McIntyre & Owens win — Shakiel Mahjouri

Bianca Belair, Asuka, Alexa Bliss, Mia Yim & Becky Lynch vs. Damage CTRL (Bayley, IYO SKY, Dakota Kai), Rhea Ripley & Nikki Cross (WarGames Match)

As of the time of this writing, the fifth member of Belair’s team has not been announced. I’m operating on the assumption that person will be a returning Becky Lynch. If it is Lynch, it’s hard to imagine that her return wouldn’t tip the scales. Everything booked in these spots should set up something else down the road and Lynch’s return would help to shift Damage CTRL’s attention away from an endless feud with Belair. Of course, someone eventually has to take the title off Belair and Bayley felt like the best option. But dragging that out more feels pointless after they’ve had so many matches lately. Pick: Team Belair wins — Brookhouse

The success of Damage CTRL since its debut has been mixed, but Kai and Sky recapturing the women’s tag team titles were a good sign. Simply put: the villainous team is the more cohesive. Bayley’s faction is tight knit, they have a regular collaborator in Cross and Ripley plays well with Judgement Day. Ripley has emerged as her faction’s breakout member and a win here should vault her into a title match with Belair. I’ll reconsider my pick if Beth Phoenix is named the final member of Belair’s squad. Pick: Team Damage CTRL wins — Mahjouri

SmackDown Women’s Championship — Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Shotzi Blackheart

There is no logical reason Shotzi should win. She was not booked like a serious threat before becoming No. 1 contender and that hasn’t changed. There is some juice to squeeze out of a villainous Rousey run and her re-established alliance with Shayna Bazler. Rousey should win without much resistance and then on to the next one. Pick: Rousey retains the title — Mahjouri (Also Brookhouse)

United States Championship — Seth Rollins (c) vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Austin Theory

Yes, Rollins is still fairly early in his run, but WWE has set a lot of twists in place with this story and this is a situation where it’s easy to see the title change hands a few times. Theory had to swallow a pretty ugly situation with his failed Money in the Bank cash-in but now is set to maybe be able to steal the title as Lashley and Rollins pick each other off. Call it a gut feeling, but Theory getting a win and having to somehow navigate Rollins and Lashley hunting him makes a lot of sense here. Pick: Theory wins the title — Brookhouse

Rollins’ U.S. title run is too fresh to give up on now. Rollins put a lot of people over and was finally rewarded with a singles title run. He can have a good match with just about anyone and has the fans behind him. Lashley is on track for a trilogy match with Brock Lesnar. Theory hasn’t been built up in a way to justify winning the title here. Rollins will retain in a fun match that benefits from the various styles involved. Pick: Rollins retains the title — Mahjouri

AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor

The Judgement Day just keeps missing out on fully catching on as a top-level force. Styles recently was joined by his old O.C. teammates and then added Mia Yim to the mix. It feels like a solid time to let Styles get a singles win and remain a presence at the top of the card while Balor can continue spinning his wheels with a Judgement Day group that just isn’t clicking. Pick: Styles wins — Brookhouse (also Mahjouri)

Survivor Series is getting a dangerous makeover in 2022. The traditional multi-man tag team matches have been replaced by WarGames, a violent team-based match confined inside a steel cage spanning two rings.

Two WarGames matches will take place at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday night. The Bloodline’s unparalleled dominance will be tested against the combined might of The Brawling Brutes (Sheamus, Ridge Holland and Butch), Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens. The other WarGames match features Raw women’s champion Bianca Belair in her ongoing crusade against Damage CTRL. Belair has gathered allies in Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Becky Lynch and Mia Yim to combat the quintet of Bayley, Dakota Kai, Iyo Sky, Nikki Cross and Rhea Ripley.

Plus, SmackDown women’s champion Ronda Rousey is back in action when she defends her title against Shotzi Blackheart. Perhaps the most intriguing title match is the triple threat for the United States championship as Bobby Lashley and Austin Theory look to take the title off Seth Rollins.

Giants were once the apex predators in the jungles of WWE, but evolution has made way for smaller and more dynamic beasts. There will always be space for someone of Braun Strowman’s size and strength. Still, he must develop and showcase the full spectrum of his skills to thrive.

The image of a WWE superstar has shrunk over the decades. Where Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, The Undertaker and Yokozuna once reigned, it is no longer unusual to see the likes of AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston and Seth Rollins as world champions. Even undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns, despite his reasonably large frame, sports a more athletic build. In an ever-changing landscape, it is Strowman’s mission to carry the torch of his gargantuan forefathers.

“Andre the Giant is sports entertainment,” Strowman told CBS Sports ahead of Saturday’s “Tribute to the Troops” special. “He is the reason why this industry is what it is. It’s world-renowned as a global entity. When you talk about WWE, you cannot mention this company without saying Andre the Giant.

“So from him to the Big Show to Kane to Undertaker to Mark Henry to all these other giant men that have come and gone in this business, I’m one of the very last few of a dying breed of these dinosaurs, as I like to call it. So in my mind, I’m carrying on a tradition and a legacy that is fading.”

WWE’s most legendary big men have endured because of their ranges as performers. The Undertaker tweaked his character over the years between “The Deadman” and “The American Badass.” The nightmarish Kane was presented as “The Devil’s Favorite Demon,” but he and Daniel Bryan are fondly remembered for their tag team couple’s therapy sessions. The Big Show is certainly imposing, but he is equally entertaining in comedies such as “Jingle All the Way” and “The Waterboy.”

“The stereotype of being this bigger guy is that I’ve had things handed to me in life or that I Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum my way through life, grinding up people’s kids to make my bread,” Strowman said. “There’s more to it than that. I look like this big, imposing, scary monster, but at the end of the day, I’m a passionate, caring, loving, articulate human being. I want to be able to not only portray the monster side of things, but I want to show the world that there is more than meets the eye. Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Strowman has a few tricks up his sleeve. Do not be surprised if the 6-foot-8, 385-pounder hits a moonsault off the top rope.

“I can do one, not a problem,” Strowman said. “It’s not a matter of being able to do one, it’s a matter of doing it at the right time.”

WWE is heading to London, England for its first major event in two decades. WWE Money in the Bank will take place at the O2 Arena on Saturday, July 1, marking the first time WWE has aired a premium live event or pay-per-view in the country since 2003.

WWE has not held an event of this scale in England since 2003’s “Insurrextion” PPV in Newcastle. Insurrextion was headlined by Triple H vs. Kevin Nash (with Shawn Michaels) for the vacant world heavyweight championship. All three superstars have since retired from in-ring performing with Triple H and Michaels being promoted to chief content officer and senior vice president of talent development creative, respectively.

The Money in the Bank event generally features a men’s and women’s Money in the Bank ladder match. The matches feature multiple superstars competing to retrieve a briefcase hanging over the center of the ring. The briefcase holder is rewarded with a championship match at a time and location of their choosing over the next year.

WWE’s most recent visit to the United Kingdom was for September’s Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales. It was the first U.K. stadium show since 1992’s SummerSlam headlined by The British Bulldog vs. Bret Hart and featuring the likes of “Macho Man” Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior.

After announcing his retirement this past July amid investigations into decades of alleged sexual misconduct, Vince McMahon is now back as executive chairman of WWE’s board of directors. McMahon’s intentions were announced in a Thursday press release, which followed a Wall Street Journal article claiming McMahon was looking to return ahead of media rights negotiations.

In the press release, McMahon asked for himself, as well as former WWE co-presidents and board members Michelle Wilson and George Barrios, to be elected to the board, three board members to vacate their seats in a corresponding move and McMahon to then be named executive chairman.

On Friday, an SEC filing confirmed that the trio had, in fact, been placed into those roles. A statement from co-CEOs Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan, as well as chief content officer Paul Levesque followed.

“Today, we announce that the founder of WWE, Vince McMahon, will be returning to the Board,” Friday’s statement read. “We also welcome back Michelle Wilson and George Barrios to our Board of Directors. Together, we look forward to exploring all strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value.”

Even after retiring in July, McMahon remained WWE’s controlling shareholder. In the initial press release, McMahon stated that as WWE nears media rights negotiations for shows such as Raw and SmackDown, they will need the company’s controlling shareholder on board to guide the process and approve any new deals.

Interestingly, Thursday’s release also suggests that a sale of WWE as a whole could be at play during those media rights negotiations.

“WWE is entering a critical juncture in its history with the upcoming media rights negotiations coinciding with increased industry-wide demand for quality content and live events and with more companies seeking to own the intellectual property on their platforms,” McMahon said in the release. “The only way for WWE to fully capitalize on this opportunity is for me to return as Executive Chairman and support the management team in the negotiations for our media rights and to combine that with a review of strategic alternatives. My return will allow WWE, as well as any transaction counterparties, to engage in these processes knowing they will have the support of the controlling shareholder.”

McMahon expanded on his intentions in a statement made to shareholders, suggesting he did not intend to interfere in the current status of the company’s management.

“I am extremely confident in the continued success of WWE, and I leave our company in the capable hands of an extraordinary group of superstars, employees, and executives — in particular, both chairwoman and co-CEO Stephanie McMahon and co-CEO Nick Khan,” McMahon said.
